About Dr. Williams

Dr. Williams received the 1994 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is a regular speaker at workshops for the Texas Certified Public Managers Program, and he also does consulting in a variety of organizations across Texas. Dr. Williams has helped numerous organizations develop and analyze employee feedback surveys,as well as conducted communication analyses in hospitals, public utilities, publishing companies, and organizations in the communication industry. He was part of a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) in the Department of Education, which evaluated and compared drug awareness and prevention programs. He has published articles in journals including Human Communication Research, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Journal of Applied Communication, Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, and Sloan Management Review.

Sample of Courses Taught

COMM 3301 Communication Research Methods & Theory
An analysis of communication as a behavioral science with emphasis on quantitative research. Focuses on the student as a consumer of communication research. Explores the interdisciplinary nature of human communication as well as the resulting theory and principles. Prerequisite: 6 hours COMM

COMM 3319 Introduction to Organizational Communication
Examines contemporary research about the influence of communication on the organization. Prepares the student to understand and manage communication processes in organizations. Prerequisite: 6 hours COMM.

COMM 4331 Persuasion
An investigation of rhetorical and behavioral theories of persuasion, the devising of persuasive campaigns, as well as the consumption and generation of persuasive messages in a variety of communication settings. Applicable for careers in business, law, and human relations. Prerequisite: 6 hours COMM or permission of instructor.

COMM 4347 Leadership and Communication
An advanced course in communication designed to examine in detail the phenomenon of leadership in groups and organizations. Various theories and approaches to leadership will be surveyed with an emphasis on applying leadership principles. Prerequisites: COMM 2330 and COMM 3319.

COMM 5329C Advanced Organization Communication Theory and Practice.
Examines organizational communication theory and research in applied organizational contexts. Prerequisite: COMM 5319 or permission of instructor.

COMM 5331 Seminar in Persuasive Communication
An analysis of behavioral theories of persuasion. Emphasis placed on understanding established theories of attitude formation and change, contemporary persuasion, research, and the application of persuasion theory.
