About Dr. Mandziuk
Dr. Mandziuk's research focuses upon the rhetorical uses of historical narratives and images, as well as upon the critique of contemporary images of women, particularly those circulated by the mass media. She is the co-author of a book about the rhetoric of Sojourner Truth, and has authored numerous articles and book chapters on such topics as 1920's popular culture, television talk shows, advertising, and public memorials. Her essay, "The Rhetorical Construction of Sojourner Truth," co-authored with Suzanne P. Fitch received the 2002 Rose B. Johnson Publication award from the Southern States Communication Association. Dr. Mandziuk is a past editor of the journal Women's Studies in Communication , and is an Associate Editor for Critical Studies in Media Communication, and the Southern Communication Journal.
Dr. Mandziuk has been a visiting scholar at both Moscow State University and the University of Amsterdam. She was selected by Communication Studies students as the recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Graduate Teaching excellence in 2002.

COMM 3302 Rhetorical Criticism
Exploration of public, persuasive messages through application of the process of critical analysis. Focuses on developing the student's analytical, research, and writing skills and prepares the student to understand the influence of rhetorical discourse in political and social contexts. Prerequisite: 6 hours COMM. (WI)
COMM 4307 Media Criticism
Explores the influence of media messages based upon communication and rhetorical theories in shaping perceptions and values. Focus is upon the rhetorical analysis of how the visual media of film and television communication social, political, and personal attitudes and behaviors. Prerequisite: COMM 1310.
COMM 4322 The Rhetoric of Social Protest
Explores the persuasive strategies used by protest and political movements to promote social and political change. Focuses upon the application of critical perspectives in understanding the stages, leadership styles, and rhetorical appeals characteristics of movements in American society. Prerequisite: COMM 1310.(WI)
COMM 5323 Rhetorical Methods
A study of approaches to the analysis of public discourse directed toward establishing workable perspectives for students conducting rhetorical analysis. Required of speech communication majors.
COMM 5327 Contemporary Rhetorical Theory
A survey of the major contemporary theoretical perspectives and conceptual debates in rhetoric. Focuses upon critical interpretations and applications of theory in addition to study of the primary theorists' writings. Provides communication managers and consultants with tools and procedures for diagnosing and changing communication. Prerequisite: COMM 5319 or permission of instructor.
COMM 5343 Contemporary Rhetoric and Social Influence
The analytical study of speeches, speakers, groups, movements, and rhetorical strategies in contemporary society. Includes emphasis on the following topics: rhetoric and culture, rhetorical movements, and rhetorical genres. May be repeated with a different topic.
COMM 5355 Media Criticism
A rhetorical analysis of media from a Contemporary Cultural Studies perspective.
