About Dr. Cornett

Michael M. Cornett, Ph.D., is currently a Lecturer in Communication Studies at Texas State University. He was formerly Associate Professor of Communication at Loyola University Chicago and is now Professor Emeritus. His teaching and research interests focus in the fields of persuasion, intercultural communication, advertising, and political communication.

Dr. Cornett holds a B.A. degree from Ottawa University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Florida State University. Prior to coming to Texas State University Dr. Cornett held full-time teaching positions at Georgetown College, Florida State University, University of Florida, Texas Christian University, and Loyola University Chicago.

Dr. Cornett’s teaching is informed by his broad experience as a management consultant and trainer in a variety of business, government, educational, religious, and not-for-profit organizations. His clients included the American Medical Association, Leo Burnett (and other major advertising agencies), KPMG Peat Marwick, Amsted Industries, AT&T, Ameritech, and the Illinois Department of Transportation. In Cook County he worked with the Departments of Personnel, Human Resources, Adult Probation, Corrections, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Medical Examiner, Social Services, and the Sheriff’s Department. Successful programs developed and presented by Dr. Cornett include written business communication, stress management, time management, executive speaker training, effective meeting planning and management, problem solving and decision making, ethics for professionals, and managing diversity. He has worked with all levels of management from presidents and CEOs to middle managers.

Dr. Cornett is the co-author of a widely adopted text in interpersonal communication and various articles in regional and state communication journals. He has presented numerous convention papers and participated in professional panels and programs.

In addition to his professional and academic work, Dr. Cornett has a wide range of outside activities.  He is an elder in charge of communications at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Antonio and a member of the choir.

He is an avid motorcyclist and has traveled extensively by motorcycle through all 50 states and most European countries. He has ridden 400,000 miles mostly on BMW motorcycles. He is a member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association, the American Motorcyclist Association, the Internet BMW Riders Motorcycle Club, and the San Antonio BMW Riders Association. He is a state licensed emergency medical technician, a master SCUBA diver and Divemaster, an instrument-rated pilot, a marathoner, and a skier.  For ten years he was a part-time Deputy Sheriff in Cook County.

COMM 1340 Voice and Diction
The human voice and the sounds of speech. The student's own voice and pronunciation will be the primary concern, using practice sessions to develop more acceptable patterns of voice and sounds.

COMM 2315 An Introduction to Interpersonal Communication
An introduction to material exploring face-to-face communication and relational development. Emphasis on conceptual foundations, personal growth and skill enhancement.

COMM 3329 Intercultural Communication
Presents theory and application of communication skills for a culturally diverse world. Develops verbal and nonverbal abilities in social and professional intercultural contexts. Prerequisite: COMM 1310
