VRC Use and Policy

Visual Resource Center Collections are developed in response to course needs. Please contact the VRC Curator if you are an Art & Design Faculty Member and do not find the images you need for instruction in our collections or in the ARTstor subscription database. Films or other audio-visual materials may be approved for purchase by the Department Chair; please contact the VRC Curator with this request.

Publications

The VRC publications collection consists of a variety of donated books, monographs, gallery catalogs, and journals on topics in art & art history, communication design and advertising, or architecture. These are available for browsing at the JCM 3102a Learning Lab only; they may not be borrowed. Included in the publications collection is the Lyle Metzdorf Collection of Graphic Design and Advertising books.

Student Use

Students may view publications, some course textbooks, films, or art imagery while at the 3102a lab. If needed for a class presentation, students may borrow a small number of 35mm slides during the day of their presentation. These students may visit the collections up to 3 days prior to their presentation, in order to select slides and place them on hold for their class presentation.

At JCM3102a, the Student Learning Lab, students may use computers and scanners, a printer, projection equipment, a light table, or the digital image card reader.  They may use the DVD/VRC player in JCM3102d.

Check out of items at 3102a is not presently associated with either the "Comm Des" Print Center or the "Comm Des" digital camera checkout.

Faculty Use

Please contact the VR Receptionist or VR Curator for assistance, as needed.

Copy Stand

Please schedule use of the copy stand with the VR Curator.  Faculty may oversee use of the copy stand by their students.

Copy stand lamps produce 5400K mid-day (outdoor) light.

The VRC copy camera is available for Faculty to use on the copy stand  (Nikon D200 digital slr).

This camera is set up with a Nikkor 24-85 mm f2.8-4.0 zoom lens, so that you will not have to roll the camera up and down the support pole to frame each differently sized art work.  Since this lens is made for film cameras, in effect it acts like a 36mm to 128mm lens.  The digital sensor is about 2/3 the size of the film lens projection, thereby eliminating soft edges.

Use the lens only between 35mm and 70mm to limit distortion at the edges.

Reflections: Because there are polarizer filters over the copy stand lamps, remember to use a circular polarizier filter on your camera.
