To introduce students and professionals to Florence and its rich culture and artistic heritage. To provide opportunities for students to express their impressions through studio and field excercises.
Students will have the opporutnity to work and make art "on location" within a wide range of environments, such as the historic city center, famous parks and gardens, museums, and in the Tuscan Hills and hill towns surrounding Florence.
The Program will have daily field trips to churches and museums within Florence as well as excursions to other Italian cities, including Pisa, Siena, San Gimiganono, Rome and (Optional) Venice.
Students will receive individual instruction and guidance from a photography instructor, drawing instructor, and an authority on Italian art history. These professionals will help to develop students' artistic skills in an environment that has stimulated artists for centuries, as well as established confidence in their abilities to study and research in a foreign country.

In May 2009 the MFA program took a group of 6 students on their first field trip to Germany. The group visited the Bauhaus in its 90th birthday year (Berlin, Weimar, and Dessau); the largest international type conference called TypoBerlin, as well as Linotype in Bad Homburg, and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen in Heidelberg. Studio tours and museum visits were part of the 12-day excursion as well; based on the success of the trip, it is likely to become an annual Mini-May semester option.

Beverly Penn, a professor in the Department of Art and Design at Texas State University-San Marcos, was honored by university President Denise M. Trauth at the 40th Presidential Seminar Wednesday, April 8.
Penn discussed “Second Nature: Art as Primary Experience,” during the seminar.
The Presidential Seminar represents the highest honor the university bestows upon faculty for scholarly and creative activity.
“Certainly, it is high recognition of the individual selected,” said Bill Covington. associate vice president for research and chair of the Presidential Excellence Award for Scholarly/Creative Activities Committee. “It is prestigious and applauds the accomplishments and efforts of people who are selected.”
The recent work of Penn, who specializes in metal sculpture, explores the sacrifices that accompany the advances of industrial and post-industrial times. Issues her sculptures address include escalating emissions, deforestation, compromised personal privacy and loss of identity. Employing man-made materials in ways that make them appear organic in her art, Penn explores the dichotomy between artificially constructed spaces and those that are natural.
“My work poses elements from landscape against human constructions as a means of articulating both the tragic and humorous complexities of contemporary culture,” Penn said.
Texas State Art BFA alumnus Stephanie Nance has entered into a licensing arrangement with Artists to Watch, which is publishing her Holiday 2009 greeting card. For more information on Stephanie's artwork and activities, visit her website: http://stephanienancestudio.com.
