Dr. David Hefner’s paintings and woodcut prints have been represented by the Davis Gallery, Austin, since 1991. Hefner’s undergraduate degree specialization was in early childhood education. He taught kindergarten for seven years at the Open Door, a private non-profit preschool in Austin. The Open Door was the first preschool in the nation that embraced full integration – the Open Door accepts all children of any “circumstance” as well as those of us whose special needs have not been identified/defined. The experience of painting daily with kindergarteners dedicated Hefner to art-making. He attended the University of Texas for 30 hours of portfolio development and then entered their MFA Program in Painting. He also earned his PhD. in Curriculum and Instruction from UT and wrote his dissertation on the application of John Dewey’s 1934, Art As Experience, to elementary art curriculum. Hefner is a student teacher supervisor and has taught painting and art education at Texas State since 2001.
